Many cities have been adjusting their zoning laws to encourage transit-oriented development, which is development that complements public transportation. A possible way cities could pay for their contributions is by having a special taxing district around the stations. Tax revenue from the developments or special assessments from them could help pay for the cost of running the Coastal Link.Ĭities that end up with a station on the Florida East Coast Railway tracks would be expected to chip in the cost of maintaining and operating that station, Stephens said. Plans that show future potential development around stations could help attract federal money to help pay for the Coastal Link.
